Gratitude means being thankful, counting your blessings and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life in a positive way and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you have been given. We tend to take for granted what is good in our lives. For many people, gratitude is difficult, because life can be difficult, and yet, others are naturally more grateful.

As with all human behaviours, we need to practise gratitude. Consider making a couple of simple cards, one that has ‘I’m glad …’ as the heading, and other with ‘I’m thankful …’. Try keeping the cards in a prominent place at home or work to encourage you to complete the sentence starters in a way that is true for that moment in time. For example, ‘I’m glad … my children are healthy’ or ‘I’m thankful … I have a job I enjoy’. As you begin and continue this practise, you will hopefully grow experiences of gratitude.
